Land price in 35 major cities increased 0.36 percent year-on-year in the third quarter, a 2.49 percent rise over the previous quarter, according to data released Tuesday.

The average price amounted to 3, 345 yuan ($489.93) per square meter, the Ministry of Land and Resources' report said.

The land prices for commercial use and residential use are 5341 yuan ($782.28) and 4739 yuan ($694.11) per square meter, up 1.52 percent and 1.93 percent respectively year-on-year.

The land price for industrial use fell to 739 yuan ($108.24) per square meter, down 2.14 percent from the third quarter last year, the data said.

"The increase in land prices for residential use was caused by soaring home prices, while the fall in the price of land for industrial use has resulted from preferential government policies," Zhao Song, director of China Land Surveying and Planning, the agency in charge of calculating of the data, told the Global Times on Wednesday.

"Land prices all over the country are basically at reasonable levels, except in some cities," she said, "and residential land prices are not rising as fast as home prices."

Some developers bought land at record high prices in the past few months, but analysts said this was an abnormal phenomenon because the real economy of the country has not recovered that fast.

"Local governments benefit from rising land prices because it increases their revenues," Liu Weixin, deputy director of the Institute of Modern Urban-Rural Development Planning, told the Global Times on Wednesday.

"Property developers are buying land at high prices with the hope that they will be able to sell buildings at inflated rates, consequently driving up prices of homes in the area," Liu explained.

Nov. 25, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Silver Grant International Industries Ltd<0171> announced today that it has signed a share subscription agreement with CGNPC International Ltd, a fully-owed subsidiary of China Guangdong Nuclear Power Holding Co Ltd.

According to the agreement, CGNPC International will spend HK$728.28 million to subscribe for 364.14 million shares of Silver Grant International at HK$2 apiece.

CGNPC International will hold a 16.67% stake in the Hong Kong-listed company and will be the second-largest shareholder. China Cinda Asset Management Corp, the largest shareholder of Silver Grant International, will see its stake in the company diluted to 18.4% from 22.08%.

Silver Grant International said that the proceeds from the share sale will be used for investment projects or acquisitions relating to natural resources, energy and nuclear power.

CGNPC, set up in 1994 with a registered capital of RMB 10.2 billion, is the only clean energy enterprise under the supervision of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission that focuses on nuclear power.

Dec. 9, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Chinese stocks opened lower on Wednesday morning.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index, which covers both A shares and B shares on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, opened at 3,258 points, down 1.17% from the previous closing.

The Shenzhen Component Index on the smaller Shenzen Stock Exchange opened 1.09% lower at 13,777.8 points.

May 13, 2009 (China Knowledge) - China Everbright Bank (CEB), the first state-owned commercial bank with shares held by international financial institutions, currently has no plan for an initial public offering on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, sources reported, citing the lender's president Guo You.

Guo denied earlier reports that CEB had applied for an IPO on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and was preparing for an H-share listing and an A-share listing that would both be launched in the second half of this year and would raise a total of between US$2 billion and US$3 billion.

Guo said that the bank has applied only for an A-share listing and does not have any plans for an H-share listing for the time being.

Last June, the lender applied for the A-share listing. However, it is still waiting for approval from regulators.

Since last April, the lender has issued four batches of subordinated bonds worth RMB 16 billion to prepare for public trading, and has disposed of non-performing assets worth RMB 14.2 billion.
